Politics and Dr Who

Musing on a society saturated with out of date attitudes to being British, and where you are required every five years to look at what is really going on and choose to forget or protest...

It occurs to me that some parallels can perhaps be drawn between a space whale who is last of its kind, loves children, and has been tortured for years by people relying on its efforts in lieu of an engine to keep them going, and a certain prime minister of our acquaintance...

And to wonder what might be made of a suggestion that stopping torturing him might be a good thing to do.

(And to note in passing the parellels with LeGuin's The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.)

Thanks for posting the title of the story. Someone elsewhere also noted the LeGuin similarities and I've been wondering which one it was ever since. Far too long since I last read The Winds Twelve Quarters to actually remember it.

More likely it is a reminder of what has a happened over the past five years and whether we should choose to forget and therefore be complicit in everything done in our names of which we did not approve. In other words, choose to vote for the bastards who screwed us, because they are keeping us in line with unspecified threats.
