Planting a tree

I've just ordered a Victoria Plum tree as a birthday gift for Brian, although it will be a little late as it should be delivered towards the end of November, and probably won't fruit for at least a couple of years. But better late than never. Both of us love Victoria plums, and he has fond memories of a plum tree in an aunt's garden when he was a child. They are self-fertile, apparently, although having the Mirabelle the other side of the garden should help to improve the yield.

When it arrives we will plant it near the house, more-or-less where an old plum tree stump used to be that supported ivy until I had it taken out last year. Meantime I will go and buy and spread some well-rotted compost to improve the soil.

I've ordered from Victoriana Nursery, as recommended by Audacious Veg. Sorry RHS. It was your catalogue that inspired the thought, but I don't really need to pay you £65 plus delivery for a tree in a pot when I can pay £20 to a recommended nursery.

Two years sounds about right. The plum that we planted a year and a half ago flowered this spring but didn't set any fruit. We expect fruit next year.

Oh wow I have just been discussing getting a Victoria plum with neighbour for a space in back we have cleared. Wil they cope with mostly shade? How much space do they need? Who did you order it from? See I have been meaning to research this but if I can lazyweb it...!

You're welcome. They have pages for planting and care of the tree as well.

While you're adding compost, try and lift the soil a bit with a fork to reduce compaction.
