I bought this one: http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?model=TL-WPA4226KIT from my local Maplin (which had it at the standard internet price and was helpful and friendly) so I can take it back if necessary.

I plugged it in with wires both ends, and configured it by pressing buttons. My PC is working fine on the wire. Major objective achieved.

But although the adaptor is plugged in beside my desk and is supposed to be providing a wireless hotspot in this room, and the front of house is getting 5-bars for both 2G and 5G networks, at my desk my phone is seeing the 2G network at 1 bar only, and the 5G network at 1 bar or not at all. So still some work to do because I do want the wireless network available to devices in this room.

If you are depending on house wiring to carry your ethernet signals, there may be too much cross-talk noise in the wires to be fully effective. A wireless repeater may work better. Look at the non-powerline range extenders.

I already had one of those. It worked fine to boost the signal, but did not prevent it dropping out repeatedly. This should be more reliable - and so far I have had about five working hours without losing the internet on my PC today. A nice change after never being able to rely on it to be there when I next asked for something from the internet.
