I've been trying to work out why I chose to read this rather than the next so-far-unread volume of Naomi Novik's Temeraire series, when both were on offer and I'm enjoying both series. I think it's because I was more in the mood for Lady Trent's slightly detached and rueful first-person tone of voice than for Novik's straightforward third person telling of her stories. Also, Novik has a preference for Lawrence's will to action when it is Temeraire's education that I really enjoy most about that series.

Anyway.

Volume 3 of Lady Trent's memoirs. The difficulties at Bayembe are behind her, her major discoveries still ahead. But there is knowledge to be had from undertaking the voyage of the Basilisk, and adventures enough to satisfy even a hardened adventurer. Jake starts becoming a person. Tom is long-suffering. Lady Trent acquires a...and a...and gets to...no, can't do it without spoilers. Never mind. New questions have been exposed, new relationships made, and new possibilities opened up for future volumes. I do hope we find out who Suhail is and that we get to meet him again.

Enjoyed.

Likewise, though it may not be very soon. There are so many books...

I am also enjoying these, although I could wish for more focus on her research and less on her private life!

I quite like the balance, and the sense she manages to convey quite economically of the way each affect the other.

I thoroughly enjoy these - for me she gets the tone of a Victorian lady explorer exactly right for most of the time, and the bits that don't work can generally be explained as not being in our world.
