Playing Rapunzel

On Friday night we went to the Melbourne Road Teachers' Centre to listen to Mich and Marilisa, and take tea and delicious little cakes - I ate about six of the little ginger balls, and the shortbread biscuits came in the shapes of animals, a nice touch. Saw many friends there also. The audience was perhaps 50 people.

They sang and played a good variety of songs, including two in Yiddish and one in Greek, some that they wrote themselves, some of other people's words (hi Zander) that they set to music, and some other people's songs (one by permission of Show of Hands). Some were funny and some were sad (I cried to Lorien). Although I could not claim to have an educated ear, I couldn't fault the music.

It was a very early gig in their performing careers, and that showed a little. Their banter between songs was unecessarily self-deprecating, and some of the segues a bit clumsy.

But it was a lovely evening, and I shall buy their forthcoming CD.

Also notable was the Ilford Recorder's matter-of-fact reference to filk and filk cons in their musical history - perhaps the first time I have seen mention of such in non-fannish press without implicit or explicit derision.
