Small steps

So the good news is that I have finally installed a decent memory chip in my phone, sorted out RSS feeds to download podcasts, and am listening on my phone as I type.

And the bad news is that my computer will make no sound although as far as I can tell nothing is out of order.

Poot!

By far the most common cause of computers failing to make music is someone plugging the speakers into either the microphone or line out socket rather than the speaker (green) socket :-)

Then there's the "power supply for speakers is either not plugged in (one end or other) or the socket is switched off"

Then there's the "speakers have a volume or power switch and it's all the way down or off"

After that there are software things ...

... and sometimes it just doesn't work!

The "killer app" for me on an mp3 player is bookmarking.

I want to be able to return to the point I was listening to in a long podcast / audiobook, even if I turn the device off, or listen to some music on it.

My phone doesn't even remember what track it was on last, so I've bought a nice little mp3 player, and a £30 pair of noise cancelling headphone for the tube.

I've got Escape Pod comes with my full recommendation.

Starship sofa and Beam Me Up are on my "look at once I've cleared the backlog" list.

If I had a long enough commute I wouldn't consider downloading radio 4 shows, as that would be naughty.
