Take a picture of yourself right now...

Grrr!

I've taken the picture - even though it's ghastly I haven't cheated. But when I try to post it it just comes up as a link to the URL on my hard drive which won't preview.

Do I have to have a paid account to do this or is there something I'm missing?

You need to put the pic somewhere the Interweb can see it.

Yes, but where is that? I see I can use Photobucket via LJ. Or perhaps (this has just occurred to me) I have some webspace with my email account... Any recommendations for best practice before I establish a bad habit from ignorance?

Well what I did was upload my huge original image to Flickr. Flickr then creates a smaller version in the "preview" screens, and I just used that url (obtained by right clicking and choosing "copy image location") in an image tag within LJ:

<img src="url in here" >

I suspect you could do similar with Photobucket.

Use a phone cam and put Liveblog on phone - that was what I did (if you have web anabled phone..)

Try the rich text posting option - allows you to upload a picture from your hard disk.

Option is greyed out and it says 'upgrade to access scrapbook'.

It does sound like a paid option ... get a free account at Flickr and post it up there, and then put a link into your post on LJ.

Found it, you post the picture up to www.flickr.com, click on the "all sizes" option over the picture once you've loaded it up there and pick "medium". When the picture is displayed, below it will be the HTML you need to copy to paste it into LJ, like this

I find that Photobucket works pretty well, but remember that ANYONE can look at the images you post there, not just your friends. It's pretty simple - get the free Photoucket account, upload pictures there, then copy the link from below the picture into your livejournal post.

I think this may be a windows issue - it's what happens when I use a micro$oft product to try to paste images into documents, for example.

Are you using exploder or firefox? The latter might be better... Flock would be better still, but is a bit specialized.
