Ben Aaronovitch - Foxglove Summer (2014)

Fifth in the Rivers of London series, this takes Peter Grant to rural Herefordshire, where he engages in his usual mix of reflecting on police procedures involving magic, lusting after rivers, and worrying about Lesley. I thought the transfer to the countryside and country folk worked extremely well, and that the book is well up to the form of the previous books in the series. The ending is slightly weak, leaving some matters unresolved, but I have faith that these will be addressed in a future book.

At the Melton Mowbray last night I was surprised to find someone disagreeing vehemently about its quality, thinking it is a falling off and that Peter should hurry back to London. I also think Aaronovitch's work has much of the same quality as Diana Wynne Jones, and I enjoy it for much the same reasons, but again, a DWJ fan disagreed heartily. But hey, that's reading for you

Particular favourite passage:

" ‘Sic transit Gloria mundi,’ I said, because it was the first thing that came into my head... It could have been worse. I could have said Valar morghulis instead."

Other favourite passages involve spoilers, but the walk through the woods at night reminded me of Garner, and I think that is high praise.

Oh, and there are Aaronovitch events at Redbridge Libaries in April:

I'm afraid I agree that it isn't the best of the series - but they are all pretty good, including this one.

I enjoyed it a lot, but perhaps that's because it's not part of the grand overarching plot thingy, which I suspect may be going to annoy me.
