Some back story.

The phrase of course comes from Monty Python, a sketch about a tourist trying to conduct business in a tobacconist whilst using a defective phrasebook which was in series 2.

Shortly after I started at Leeds University in 1970, it was rag week and the rag review team had written to the Monty Python team to ask if there was a sketch they could use in their show. This was the sketch they got and it was performed on the stage of the Leeds City Variety theatre some weeks before the sketch went out on the BBC. I saw it and I had not seen Monty Python at that time.

I also remember that I wrote a piece for PAPA in early 1990 about a trip to Paris I'd made and titled it with the French translation of My Hovercraft... I do wonder if that is what sparked its use at Confiction.

In 1994 I was at a Eurocon in Romania and Joe Haldemann was talking about how he'd scripted a film which he discovered had been shown in Thailand before it got a release in the US. A friend had seen it and it had been subtitled in a "my hovercraft is full of eels sort of way." I could see the simultaneous translators' faces from where I was sitting, and they looked confused.
