The Egyptian Geese have ducklings

IMG_20140924_084848

The information I was given by the Valentines Park manager who is responsible for them is:

Egyptian Geese  - Alopochen aegyptiacus - are in fact ornamental ducks and their young are ducklings, not goslings. They have a large range across North Africa and Europe. They were introduced to and maintained in the UK as ornamentals, and until recently were unable to breed successfully because they insisted in laying eggs December-February and the ducklings did not survive.

However, this is this year's third clutch in Valentines Park, so they are clearly naturalising, and the duck bit is
not entirely supported by the internet which reports them hybridising with Canada geese.

Oh, how lovely! Though this seems like an odd time of year for goslings.

Good to know they're adapting. They're very beautiful.

I'm now puzzled as to whether these should properly be referred to as ducklings or goslings. On the one hand, they're baby geese, so goslings. On the other hand. Egyptian geese are actually shelducks not geese, so ducklings.

I wasn't puzzled, but now I am again. See edited entry.

Cladistically speaking, as Anatidae, swans and geese are just a fancy sort of duck. Except for the magpie goose, which being outside Anatidae, is neither a goose, nor a duck (nor a magpie).

But (as Anseriformes) ducks, swans, geese and magpie geese are all a kind of goose anyway.

Very pretty, whether duck- or goslings.

Ooh we have some adults on our lake at work but I've never seen offspring. Those certainly look more like ducklings than goslings.

We missed seeing the ducklings the other day! We'll keep an eye out for them.
