Good weekend

M spent Saturday night with friends, so weekend included child-free 24 hours.
Watched Spider Man on DVD - ok-ish. Not really up for US teen angst these days.
Went to bed for a couple of hours (yes!)
Watched The Fifth Element on DVD - silly plot (what's unusual?), good fun. I'd watch it again.
Chinese all-you-can-eat buffet with bottle of wine.
The cherry blossom is going over, so on Sunday morning B and I used one climbing frame, one step ladder, two brooms, one rake, 8 sq.m. of fine netting, some clothes pegs and some garden wire twist to rig the net round one branch of the cherry tree so that this year we get to beat the birds to at least a few cherries. Nearly three hours between us - expensive cherries - if it works.

Read Rosemary Sutcliffe's memoir of childhood, Blue Remembered Hills.

A tale of loneliness and repeated bereavement. No wonder she became a writer, and no wonder she could write so wonderfully of bleakness and love.

When I first saw The Fifth Element with friends, in the Netherlands, we decided that the sub-title of this film was something like "Die Hard meets Art Deco/Bauhaus" because of all the fun set and costume design.

I could see why you're not up for teenage angst of the Murrican variety these days.

Will have to try that book, thanks for mentioning it.
