Breakfast...

Daughter is sleeping over, so kidneys for breakfast - with mustard and coriander, on toast. Yum! Can't buy pigs' or lambs' kidneys now - "there's no demand".
Stoppard's Rock and Roll last night - um. Lots of good bits. Anyone want to lend me some Pink Floyd CDs?
Heard Branford Marsalis on In Tune - new album Braggtown - I want.

Rock and Roll was worth seeing but engaged me less than other Stoppard plays that I have seen. The programme says (I paraphrase) its about how your life decisions can't be apolitical. You may try to refuse engaging in the political debate of your time/place, but you can't avoid that in itself being a political act. The play is as it is because the history of rock and roll in Czechoslovakia from 1986-1990 distills the general principle.
My 'um' is because I did not understand this from watching the play. Not sure entirely why not, since I did get glimpses. I did not engage with rock and roll or politics during these years, so I suspect I'm not getting most of the relevant references. And I don't do much better with Cambridge academia or modern media, which he takes some digs at. In short, I feel undereducated and not able to engage with Stoppard in this particular conversation.
Cambridge graduates of the right vintage - you for example! - will particularly enjoy it, I suspect. (Syd Barrett gets many references.)
Nevertheless, I did enjoy the evening and would recommend going. Posters on the theatre say now extended to Feb 2007. The Duke of York's is a nice theatre and our Upper Circle seats were fine, but check out theatremonkey.com and try to get seats in the centre Stalls. Also, two beers and a lemonade cost £8.40 at the interval - whoof!

Thank you for the good further explication. Of course I won't be able to see it, but enjoying it vicariously through your comments!

Is Braggtown more like Bloomington or his Buckshot LeFonque stuff? Either way, I'm interested.
